Common Misconceptions and Un-Expectations

Common Misconceptions and Un-Expectations Things at MIT that seem normal once youre here for a while, but you realize are not, in fact, normal With the influx of the 24s terrorizing (see: joining) various Discord servers Im a part of, Ive realized that there are certain things about MIT that Ive picked up on that I realize are not quite the norm. Being home around my family who does not know a thing about MIT while simultaneously having to explain how MIT works to curious 24s has made me realize that there isa lot about the school that a lot of people dont know about. So, I decided to make a blogpost of things-Ive-had-to-explain-to-non-MIT-people-a-lot so that when YOU are asked all these things, you can just link them to this post. Moreover, I also made a list of things-people-think-about-MIT-that-actually-arent-true-ya-dinguses because I am so tired of repeating the fact that yes, MIT has good humanities. Let me repeat that. YES, MIT HAS GOOD HUMANITIES. Okay, lets begin. Note: I, of course, wont expose all of it because I think one of the fun things about going to college is having to relearn and adapt to this new environment. Its extremely gratifying when you befriend upperclassmen and they give you the latest tips and tricks on how to not die at this new school and you just feel really cool when youre like, Hey guys I know this secret URL that tells you everything about this class and can help you do things and you just become a god among your small group of innocent baby frosh. One of my favorite parts about this semester was figuring out these little hacks and easter eggs about MIT. Things at MIT that seem normal once youre here for a while, but you realize are not, in fact, normal What classes are you taking? Our Number System MIT does everything by numbers. We dont have majors, we have courses and course numbers. We dont have CHEM323194324 we have things like 3.091 and 5.111, where the first number is what course the class falls under. In MIT speak, Im a CMS/6-3 and this past semester I took 3.091, 21M.011, 18.01, and 8.01L. In non-MIT speak, Im a double major in comparative media studies and computer science and this past semester I took Intro to Solid-State Chemistry, Intro to Western Music, Calculus I, and Physics I. A lot of people complain that this system is not normal and inconvenient and it takes a while to memorize. However, it really, really isnt that bad. You pick up on the numbers really quickly. Within two weeks, I think I knew the majority of the majors at heart and even if I didnt, you were able to ask and people would explain. I really think its more convenient to say numbers rather than having to recite the title of every class, so I personally prefer the number system! But also, Im very biased. Along with our classes and majors using numbers, our buildings do, too! And no, the building numbers do not correspond to majors. I have not yet memorized all of the buildings but I know the ~general~ layout of MIT decent enough, but there is definitely a lot I still do not know. Pass/No Record and A/B/C/No Record First-years in their first semester at MIT are put on the Pass/No Record grading system. PNR is an absolute blessing and Im forever grateful that MIT has this system implemented. It makes the transition from high school to college much smoother and allows freshmen to have time to explore and socialize, rather than being cramped in their rooms stressing about their grades. Our second semester is then on A/B/C/No Record. I think this is one of the best things about MIT since no other school really has P/NR? Some schools have Pass/Fail, but I havent seen Pass/No Record anywhere else. (If you have, let me know!) Mailing Lists Mailing list culture at MIT is very Prominent. Essentially you can make infinite MIT mailing lists to communicate quickly with certain groups of people, send out information to students, or also just Entertain the People with random content. Some peak mailing lists include beemoviescript and tetazooglounge. For those of you who have no idea what Im talking about, heres what you can look forward to if you ever decide to go to MIT: thank u very cool! i managed to filter this and tetazoo glounge out, thank u god this one was actually fun to receive i did not go tho We also have our own mailing lists for inside jokes, such as the Cube Solvers Mailing List, Snoop, people who dont live on Loop but are on Loop too much, and Loop Boyfriends. Hacking You just got to come to find out. The Tunnels The MIT tunnel system is one of my favorite parts of MIT, despite only being officially in ~The Tunnels~ maybe once or twice. Its a really convenient way to navigate campus and avoid the cold and theres some really gorgeous artwork in there. Another fun thing to do is go chairing down the tunnels! Cook for yourself for first years A lot of people ask me Whats dorm hall food like at MIT? to which I reply with Its okay, but I cook for myself so I rarely go and then we get the whole YOSDFOAEYAOSDFKLEW YOU    C O O OK FOR YOURSELF??!?!? Yes! Frosh can live in cook for yourself dorms right away, you arent required to have a meal plan! Also, we dont have first year dorms; instead, youre put into a dorm with a beautiful mix of upperclassmen and frosh alike! Its really refreshing to be able to have this freedom to mingle and mix with people. Cooking for yourself is a lot cheaper, but maybe not as convenient, depending on your cooking experience. I entered MIT with z e r o cooking experience and I mainly would just buy ingredients for my friends to use, and theyd later feed me with whatever I provided for them. Its a pretty good system and I enjoy it a lot, but I do want to get more experience in cooking for when summertime hits and I no longer have my trusty friends Aiden and Mariia to cook things for me, so Im currently working on a spicy IAP post that will document Camis Crazy Cooking Adventures, from nearly burning down Random to eating food that tastes like shit but eating it anyway because I made it to the small, rare successes for when I do make good things. Independent Living Groups In addition to having sororities and fraternities, we have things that dont fall into that category called Independent Living Groups! These are really cool, small tightknit groups that typically own pretty large houses and are cook for yourself dorms. Im actually really interested in WILG and might consider rushing this spring!! On the Opposite End: Things that people expect MIT doesnt have, but we do! Humanities Classes Our humanities classes are amazing and if youre on the fence about coming to MIT because you dont know if youll be able to fulfill your humanities needs, here is a post for you! Everyone Ive met at MIT, yes, loves STEM, but simultaneously has some artistic or creative outlet. Mariia is interested in theatre and makes beautiful paintings. Aidans incredible at music composition. Emma loves dance and singing. Aiden crochets and knits A LOT. Caroline has a passion for music and playing music. There are plenty of opportunities here at MIT to see your artistic and creative passions through, whether that be through cross registration at Harvard and MassArt, or just taking classes here. I just took Intro to Western Music this past semester and it was one of my favorite classes of my first semester. I actually learned a lot and it improved my writing skills immensely, teaching me how to approach writing critically about music. Sports + PE Requirements We have PE requirements! Thats, like, a thing! And we have really cool PE classes, from fencing to rifle and pistol to scuba diving. I took Intro to Weightlifting for Women this past fall semester and it really taught me the fundamentals of lifting and inspired me to go to the gym consistently. This IAP Im taking pilates and Im really excited since I havent done pilates since junior year high school. Cant really comment much on sports since I dont really know much about it, but we have sports here! And theyre cool. Emmas on the varsity volleyball team here. I remember I went to a game and I had SO much fun. The energy is insane and the crowd always gets really riled up. Its overall such a good time and I recommend going out to our sports events!! the gym is always fucking full at nerd school Aidan Chambers MITs gym near dorm row, The Z Center, is probably the nicest gym Ive been to and yes, people at MIT get fit and are swole. I love the Z with all my heart and I missed her so much when I was at home. One of the first things I did when I got back was go work out. If you go during the right hours, it wont be full! But if you go probably around 5-6ish itll be absolutely p a c k e d. We may be a nerd school, but were a swole nerd school. Frat Life A little over 50% of MIT male undergraduates are in a frat. This is a thing! Frat life here is active! And frats here are fun and nice and we love them! Yes, MIT has parties. In fact, we have, in my humble Onion, the best parties in the Boston-Cambridge area. I will not add further comments on MIT parties, but just know that I go to them a lot and theyre very fun. In Conclusion Theres a lot that MIT has to offer that might not be very well-known, some things you can only find out if you visit or talk to upperclassmen. And even then, theres a lot you dont know until youre even a student! Every day Im still learning and finding new things to fall in love with here at MIT, strange little quirks that I wouldnt be able to find anywhere else. I really hope this IAP I get to explore a lot more :o)

Cross Cultural Differences in Math Performance: Linguistic Influence on Development in Eastern and Western Children Christina Jeon 999910967 PSY440H1 Introduction Various surveys and cross cultural studies examining children s mathematical achievement around the world have shown, fairly consistently, that Asian students continue to perform better than Western students in mathematics (Mark Dowker, 2015; Paik, Gelderen, Gonzales, Jong, Hayes, 2011). Studies have also indicated that this distinct gap in performance begins to show even before children have had any kind of formal schooling (Mark Dowker, 2015). This has only served to further reinforce the stereotype that Asian people are naturally good at math; there†¦show more content†¦Despite this line of thinking, which has been suggested for at least one to two hundred years, there is new evidence to indicate that mathematical development in children is more complicated than first thought (Mark Dowker, 2015; Dowker Roberts, 2015). It also suggests that language plays a slightly different role in the arithmetic learning than was previously hypothesized (Mark Dowker, 2015; Dowker Roberts, 2015; Paik et al., 2011). Linguistic Influence on Mathematics A wide range of cross cultural studies have been done to examine the degree of influence that language has on the development of mathematical skills, with varying results (Mark Dowker, 2015; Dowker Roberts, 2015; Paik et al., 2011). Recent cross cultural research has painted a very different picture of the extent that language truly influences the development of mathematical skills in children as they enter school (Mark Dowker, 2015; Dowker Roberts, 2015, Paik et al., 2011). LT has been found to have more specific influences on learning mathematics than the broad pervasive effect it was previously thought to have (Mark Dowker, 2015; Dowker Roberts, 2015). Studies comparing children of different ethnic backgrounds, have shown that East Asian children tend to outperform American children or children from other Western countries (Mark Dowker, 2015; Paik et al., 2011). In a study comparing British children with Chinese children from Hong Kong, i t was

Online Vs. Online Payment System - 1605 Words

Along with the exponential increase in the number of online business transactions over the last decade, the popularity of the online payment system has soared with the realization among vendors and creditors of its growing importance. The growth of the online payment system has served as a foundation in the improvement of the information and in the achievement of paperless operating efficiency. However, the growth and acceptance of the online payment system is still being challenged by varying characteristics of customers and web-systems as well as perspectives on the safety and reliability of this mode of payment. Are online-based systems safe and reliable? The goal of this research paper is to find out more on the opportunities and†¦show more content†¦The percentage of people who don t trust the Internet with the security of their financial information dropped to 8 percent in 2006 from 20 percent in 2004. Meanwhile, the number of those who believe that paying bills onlin e is safer than using paper checks increased during the same period, to 37 percent in 2006 from 24 percent two years earlier (Consumers less concerned, 2006). Compared to traditional payment methods such as check payments, phone payments, or wire transfer payments, online payments are considered better in terms of time and cost efficiency, convenience, and flexibility for people and businesses. The underlying questions that we seek to answer in this research paper is what factors determine how well online clients will accept online payments, measures should be taken by e-vendors to accelerate the acceptance of this technology, and what advantages does this form of payment have over mail payments. Further, it will also be important to consider the negatives of online payments and see whether there are any threats that may affect the credibility of e-payments as alternatives to paying bills by mail. It is a fact that e-commerce cannot thrive without a robust, secure, and well-developed e-payment infrastructure. One of the main issues that have clouded the online-based payments is the issue of trust. A level of fear has always been in online-based systems. However, there are several advantages of online-based systems that

A Rose For Emily Essays - A Rose For Emily, Homer Simpson, Emily

A Rose For Emily Essays - A Rose For Emily, Homer Simpson, Emily A Rose For Emily A Rose for emily Life is fickle and most people will be a victim of circumstance and the times. Some people choose not to let circumstance rule them and, as they say, time waits for no man. Faulkner's Emily did not have the individual confidence, or maybe self-esteem and self-worth, to believe that she could stand alone and succeed at life especially in the face of changing times. She had always been ruled by, and depended on, men to protect, defend and act for her. From her Father, through the manservant Tobe, to Homer Barron, all her life was dependent on men. The few flashes of individuality showed her ability to rise to the occasion, to overcome her dependency, when the action was the only solution available. Like buying the poison or getting money by offering china-painting classes. Life is sad and tragic; some of which is made for us and some of which we make ourselves. Emily had a hard life. Everything that she loved left her. Her father probably impressed upon her that every man she met was no good for her. The townspeople even state when her father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her; and in a way, people were glad being left alone. She had become humanized (219). This sounds as if her father's death was sort of liberation for Emily. In a way it was, she could begin to date and court men of her choice and liking. Her father couldn't chase them off any more. But then again, did she have the know-how to do this, after all those years of her father's past actions? It also sounds as if the townspeople thought Emily was above the law because of her high-class stature. Now since the passing of her father she may be like them, a middle class working person. Unfortunately, for Emily she became home bound. She didn't socialize much except for having her manservant Tobe visit to do some chores and go to the store for her. Faulkner depicts Emily and her family as a high social class. Emily did carry her self with dignity and people gave her that respect, based from fear of what Emily could do to them. Emily was a strong willed person especially when she went into the drug store for the arsenic. She said Arsenic. I want arsenic (220). All along, the druggist wanted to know what she wanted it for and she answered back I want the best you have. I don't care what kind (220). Needless to say, the druggist never got an answer. The druggist gave Emily poison out of fear and respect, possibly. Yes, Emily didn't socialize much, but she did have a gentleman friend, Homer Barron. Homer was a Forman for a road construction company, Faulkner writes a forman named Homer Barron, a Yankee a big, dark, ready man, with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face(220). Emily's father probably would not be pleased with this affair with Homer, considering her upbringing. Homer was a 'commoner' and did not fit the social standards of her father. Of course, Emily, like most women dream of getting married and having a family and most of all, being loved. The gossip around town was spreading; the townspeople said when she got to be thirty and was still single, we were not pleased, but vindicated; ... She wouldn't have turned down all of her chances if they had materialized (221). Emily wanted to be loved, and she was determined that Homer would be her true love to rescue her from fear, fear of being alone. Indeed Emily took a great liking to Homer, but Homer's feelings about the relationship were different. It was rumored that even Homer himself had remarkedhe liked men, and it was known that he drunk with younger men in the Elk's clubthat he was not a marrying man (221). Homer left Emily and the town for three days, and then came back. While Homer was gone, Emily still was preparing for her wedding. She bought invitations and clothes for Homer. Emily grew fearful of Homer's departure, fear of being left alone again. Faulkner writes A neighbor saw the Negro man (Tobe) admit him at the kitchen door at dusk one evening. And that's thelast we saw of Homer Barron (221). Once again, a fear of

Direct Object Pronouns in Italian

Direct Object Pronouns in Italian â€Å"I’m reading a book. I’m reading the book for my Italian course. My husband bought the book as well because he is taking the same course.† When you read the three sentences above, they sound pretty choppy and that’s because instead of using a pronoun, like â€Å"it,† the person speaking is just saying â€Å"book† over and over again. This is why pronouns, and in this particular case, direct object pronouns are such an  important topic to understand in Italian. What is a direct object? A direct object is the direct recipient of the action of a verb. Let us explain that with some more examples. I invite the boys. Whom do I invite? → The boys.He reads the book. What does he read? →   The book. The nouns boys and books are both direct objects because they answer the question what? or whom? When you study verbs in Italian, you may often see a note about whether a verb is transitive or intransitive. While there is a lot to know about those verbs, I want you to simply note that verbs that take a direct object are called transitive verbs. Verbs that do not take a direct object (she walks, I sleep) are intransitive. As we saw in our first example, direct object pronouns exist because they replace direct object nouns. I invite the boys. I invite them.He reads the book. He reads it. Here’s what direct object pronouns (i pronomi diretti) look like: SINGULAR PLURAL mi me ci us ti you (informal) vi you (informal) La you (formal m. and f.) Li you (form., m.) Le you (form., f.) lo him, it li them (m. and f.) la her, it le them (f.) Where do direct object pronouns go? A direct object pronoun is placed immediately before a conjugated verb. Se vedo i ragazzi, li invito. - If I see the boys, I’ll invite them.Compra la frutta e la mangia. - He buys the fruit and eats it. In a negative sentence, the word  non  must come before the object pronoun. Non la mangia. - He doesn’t eat it.Perchà ¨ non li inviti? - Why don’t you invite them? The object pronoun can also be attached to the end of an  infinitive, but note that the final –e of the infinitive is dropped. È importante mangiarla ogni giorno. - It is important to eat it every day.È una buona idea invitarli. It’s a good idea to invite them. FUN FACT: You’ll notice that when you use a direct object pronoun in the  past tense that it will often connect with a  conjugation of the verb â€Å"avere†. For example, â€Å"Non l’ho letto - I didn’t read it†. The â€Å"lo† connects with â€Å"ho† and creates one word â€Å"l’ho†. However, keep in mind that the  plural forms li and le never connect with any conjugations of the verb â€Å"avere†, like â€Å"Non li ho comprati - I didn’t buy them†. You may also see: M’ama, non m’ama. (Mi ama, non mi ama.). - He loves me, he loves me not.Il passaporto? Loro non (ce) l’hanno (lo hanno). - The passport? They don’t have it. Which verbs take a direct object? A few Italian verbs that take a direct object, such as ascoltare, aspettare, cercare, and guardare, correspond to English verbs that are used with prepositions (to listen to, to wait for, to look for, to look at). That means that you don’t have to use â€Å"per - for† when saying â€Å"Who are looking for?† in Italian. A: Chi cerchi? - Who are you looking for? B: Cerco il mio ragazzo. Lo cerco gi da mezz’ora! - I’m looking for my boyfriend. I’ve been looking for him for half an hour! What about â€Å"ecco†? â€Å"Ecco† is often used with direct object pronouns, and they attach to the end of the word to mean â€Å"here I am, here you are, here he is†, and so on. Dov’à ¨ la signorina? – Eccola! - Where is the young woman? – Here she is!Hai trovato le chiavi? – Sà ¬, eccole! - Have you found the keys? – Yes, here they are!Eccoli! Sono arrivati! - Here they are! They arrived!Non riesco a trovare le mie penne preferite - Eccole qua amore! - I can’t find my favourite pens.- Here they are honey!
